 A Book "Equip your World" (A Synoptic view of Access Technologies for the Visually Challenged) published by National Institute for the Visually Handicapped (NIVH) , Dehradun is available for sale at the cost of Rs. 760/- (Packing & forwarding Charges extra). The book can be purchased offline from the Central Braille Press of NIVH at Dehradun. Those who can visit  Central Braille Press (C.B.P) , NIVH, Dehradun can purchase the book on payment of the cost mentioned above & those who wish to procure the book by post may send the payment by pay order/cheque/demand draft of Rs. 830/- in favour of Director, NIVH including packing & forwarding charges. The 11 chapters in the book are designed to take the reader through the basics of technology,  screen readers , low vision aids, Braille reading writing and production system, other scanning and reading solutions, daily use products , educational aids, handy apps for phones & Tablets , useful online resources.


National Institute for the Visually Handicapped hosts three National Libraries that are capable of accommodating reading interest of visually impaired persons, scholars, researchers & professionals working in the field of visual disability. A rich anthology of literature concerning general & disability specific subjects in print. Braille & talking books, adorn the bookshelves of the three libraries. These libraries are unique in terms of serving their membership at their doorstep that number approximately 27000. Keeping in view the limited access of the visually impaired people to public libraries & others & to realize the aim of Sarva Siksha Abhiyan the Braille & Talking Book Library has opened up library extension service counters in different parts of the country. Till date 95 extension counters have been established.

National Braille Library

The National Braille Library has approximately 1,33,000 volumes on its shelves comprising over 15,000 titles. For providing a rich collection of Braille literature, the National Braille Library collaborates with Library of Congress USA; Royal National Institute for the Blind, U.K.; and American Federation for the Blind, USA. It is capable of catering to diverse reading interests of visually impaired persons. To facilitate free delivery of Braille Books at the doorsteps of the members, the Braille Library has come up with a novel scheme of free delivery of books on demand. All the members are provided a catalogue & they can communicate their request by phone, letter or by simply downloading the form. At any given time, a member can borrow two titles or ten volumes.

National Talking Book Library

Following the adage of Education & Entertainment the Talking Book Library is rendering invaluable service to the visually impaired persons including children. Being the largest library in the country, it has a rich collection of literature on possibly every subject. The library produces audio books in Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Urdu & some regional languages. With an elegant stock of over 6,000 titles it is benefiting more than 20,000 people across the country.

Print Library

The print library of NIVH has over 19,000 books on its shelves. It is the richest reservoirs of literature on disability and special education. Over 5,000 scholars and researchers consult this library every year.

Online Library - Sugamya Pustaklaya

On January 4th 2012, a new and important milestone was reached when the Institute launched the country’s first online Braille Library. In view of its widening horizons and advances in reading technologies on 24th August, 2016, another state-of-the-art online library with a new title ‘Sugamya Pustakaalya’ was launched by Sh. Ravi Shankar Prasad, Hon’ble Minister of Law and Justice, Information Technology, Government of India, in the gracious presence of Sh. Thawar Chand Gehlot, Hon’ble Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, Sh. Prakash Javdekar, Hon’ble Minister of Human Resource Development, Government of India, Sh. Krishan Pal Gujjar Hon’ble State Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India and Sh. Ramdas Athawale, State Minister, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India. Sugamya Pustalalaya is the national combined catalogue and digital content repository of accessible books.

This project is a joint endeavor of NIEPVD, Dehradun and Daisy Forum of India. This successful joint venture has embellished and released a very important aspect of ‘Sugamya Bharat Movement’ of Government of India. This online library has facilitated access to 3,31,942 titles in accessible format to 22,245 visually impaired members. 43 libraries have also registered with Sugamya Pustakalaya for providing online access to literature.
